Quick connections to what they need and where they want to go has helped make a new community in south Calgary well-suited to Ellery Mendez and Michelle Mendez Holmes.
The couple previously rented a duplex in Mount Pleasant. Established in 1912, the inner-city neighbourhood had a lot of what they needed built in.
Their transition to Belmont — with many important businesses in the immediate vicinity already in place — has been “easy,” says Michelle.
She and Ellery bought a three-bedroom townhome at Belwood Park by StreetSide Developments in Belmont, a master-planned community by Anthem United. Townhomes at this development start in the $250,000s.
The community is located six kilometres south of Spruce Meadows.
“We have pretty much everything we need around there,” says Ellery, an accountant. “Everything is within a (quick) drive or walking distance. And by walking distance, I mean a 10- to 15-minute walk.”
Amenities located less than 10 minutes from their new home include a commercial complex in Silverado anchored by a Sobeys grocery store, and the expansive Shawnessy Village Shopping Center.
The couple, who own two cats, were pleased to see a veterinary clinic at the Silverado site, which is a five-minute drive from Belwood Park. With a quick drive to the LRT, their commute to work is convenient, too.
“The train from (Somerset-Bridlewood) is huge for us,” Ellery says. “We both work downtown and it is very accessible.
“Even though this is a new community being developed, there are a lot of amenities around here.”
And there are more in the cards. Belmont has been tapped for a future City of Calgary recreation centre.
“We wanted to buy a home but also look at it with the mentality of an investment,” says Michelle, singling out the rec centre as being a factor in that approach.
“And having it so close and for us to use, that sounds great to us, too.”
Ellery and Michelle both enjoy being active and since moving in have made use of established pathways in the area.
“The other selling point for us is this community will be even more accessible once Stoney Trail is finished,” says Ellery. “Michelle’s dad lives in the northwest. Once (Stoney) is finished, it’s only going to be a 20-minute drive to his place.”
The couple purchased a townhome in the three-bedroom, 1,398-square-foot Boulevard model that was move-in-ready.
Michelle and Ellery each have their own vehicle, so having a garage with space for two cars, was “huge,” says Ellery.
For Michelle, an outdoor living space was a must-have.
“I like to bring my cats outside with me,” she says. “We put them on long leashes.”
A space for a table so she and Ellery can dine in the fresh air was a consideration, as well. For that reason, Michelle was excited to see the six-foot seven-inch by 16-foot two-inch balcony off the great room.
Among the couple’s favourite spaces within the home is its generously proportioned U-shaped kitchen.
“My mother said, ‘I know if I love a place after I cook in the kitchen … and your kitchen is perfect,” says Michelle, pointing to the quality of appliances and well-designed food preparation space as personal highlights.
Belwood also has a two-bedroom townhome model called the Avenue.
“What makes Belwood Park so appealing is that buyers can get a home from a builder with a good reputation that has great layouts and finishes, at a great price point,” says Belwood Park sales associate Andy Issik.
“They also feature the ability to customize finishes to reflect the buyer’s own taste and personality to really make it feel like home.”
As a quick possession home, the couple’s finishes were already in place. But they were pleased with what they saw from Stone, the interior collection featured in their home.
“It’s a good contrast,” says Ellery, adding that the use of greys elevate other colours within their space.
“I used to be an interior decorator 10 years ago,” adds Michelle, who currently works with new Canadians at a not-for-profit. “They have beautiful colour swatches. It’s like, just pick one and you’ll be happy.”
