Chelsea provides smooth landing for newlyweds’ new home

Just a few short months ago, two people working from home was two people too many for Dylan de Peuter and Nicole Andre. There was no privacy in their tiny open concept apartment on Macleod Trail. The only door they could close was to the bathroom.

“Nicole would be on calls with her clients and I’d be on a conference call, and we’d be talking over each other,” says de Peuter, a financial analyst.

“Our building was also next to the LRT, so if we were watching a movie and a train went by, we’d have to pause it,” says Andre, a hearing aid practitioner.

Motivated by the need for more space, the young couple began their hunt for a new home, setting a deadline of Sept. 5— their wedding day — which was to be marked by a small family ceremony in Lethbridge.

After a short and easy search earlier this summer, they purchased a new duplex by Truman in Chelsea, a community by Anthem United in Chestermere. It wasn’t a neighbourhood they’d even considered.

“My aunt has lived in Chestermere for 17 years and she said we should come look,” says Andre.

The couple toured the duplex show homes in Chelsea and discovered one was for sale; Truman’s Snowberry, a 1,588-square-foot, two-storey attached home with three bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and ample space for a detached garage off the lane.

The price of a new home in Chestermere versus home prices in Calgary’s northeast and southeast quadrants were very similar, says de Peuter, and had the same driving distance from all directions to downtown.

“We didn’t think we could afford a house in Chestermere. We were pleasantly surprised,” he says.

Truman is the exclusive duplex builder in Chelsea and, along with Trico Homes and Sterling Homes, is also the first to build laned single-family homes in Chestermere. Prices start in the $320,000s for attached homes and the $350,000s for laned homes.

Alberta builder Luxuria Homes has front-drive product with prices from the $500,000s.

A multi-family development is also anticipated to break ground in 2021.

With a projected build-out of 2,000 homes, Chelsea is the first new community in Chestermere for Anthem United since it completed Lakeview Landing in 2005. Senior marketing manager Megan Starke says the developer is excited to be back in Chestermere.

“Chelsea is a Celtic term for landing place as it’s the first community you arrive at when coming to Chestermere (from Calgary). It’s like living in the middle of everywhere,” she says.

Chelsea isn’t exactly next door to the lake, but it is a year-round, family focused community within a five-minute drive of Chestermere’s most famous amenity. The 304-hectare (750-acre) lake is one of the few places that allows motorized boats, with the purchase of a season’s pass.

Chelsea will also have a large environmental reserve, three storm ponds and a prairie wetland area that will bring residents closer to nature.

There are three future school sites and commercial land with established shopping areas nearby on Chestermere Boulevard and 57 stores further west at the East Hills Shopping Centre.

Andre and de Peuter say construction has been busy on their street as more homes are built and new neighbours move in. They say it’s the kind of community where people don’t hesitate to introduce themselves and even bring over food.

“We’re all pioneering our way through,” says Andre.
