A new home represents many things, but for Cristina Bellabono and Mark Roseneder, it’s all about creating new beginnings together.
The couple, both 37, are living a modern day Brady Bunch scenario, with a blended family of four gorgeous kids, Lia and Chloe, both 11, Sofia, 8, Braidon, 16, and two fur babies, kitty cats Oliver and Pearl.
“It’s a really busy household,” says Mark who works in Fort McMurray, 14 days on and 14 days off, a gruelling schedule, but one that allows him solid blocks of time with the family.
For the past four years, the family has been living in the established community of Evergreen in Calgary’s southwest, in a home that Mark says could be considered a starter home.
“It’s a really small lot with no garage and in the past six to eight months we’ve really noticed that we are outgrowing the space with the kids and all of their activities,” says Mark.
The couple began their home search about two years ago by looking at existing resale homes, but nothing jumped out at them. They wanted to stay in the south quadrant of the city close to their kids’ activities and schools. When they couldn’t find what they were looking for in an existing home, the couple searched out new build homes in new communities in Calgary’s south.
At the top of the must-have list was a large south or west facing backyard with full sun exposure.
“We have four kids and we like to be outside a lot, so that was really important to me,” says Cristina.
The kitchen also hit the top of the non-negotiable items.
“I’m Italian. We do the whole family dinner thing on Sunday. There are six of us already in our family, plus the extended family, and we needed space where everyone could gather,” says Cristina.
And when Mark is on his 14 days off, he is the chief cook and bottle washer, so to speak, so having a great kitchen was also important to him, as was having a home office.
“We went to hundreds of show homes all over the city and we saw some nice homes, but no one really had the perfect lot,” says Cristina.
Until they came across Sterling Homes’ offerings in the intimate, boutique community of Pine Creek.
Here the couple found a corner southwest facing lot that backs onto park space, with views of the rolling foothills and the creek valley.
Laced with walking trails and on the doorstep of stunning landscapes, the community will have 900 homes set into 120 acres of natural wetlands, environmental reserves, parks, playgrounds and a pond.
“It feels like we are out in the country. It’s a small community with very little commercial. It’s just a nice quiet area with the golf course behind us; really it is the best of both worlds,” says Mark.
Sterling Homes’ Pine Creek area manager, Sarah Carefoot says that the community is really appealing to young families and young couples.
While it was the lot that sold the couple, they fell in love with the home they chose to build as well.
“The floor plan is great. It has such great flow,” says Cristina. The couple purchased the Pierce model, a two-storey, 2,400 square foot, four-bedroom home with vaulted second floor bonus room, a main floor office and a kitchen with over-the-top wow factor. They are finishing the lower level with a man cave type of pad for their 16-year-old son.
The couple signed on the dotted line in December and has already picked their exterior elevation — Foursquare — and exterior colour scheme, a deep rich navy blue with natural wood garage door and front door.
“We are going to stain the wood and then carry it throughout the house,” says Mark.
As for the decor and choosing the homes finishes, the couple hasn’t got there yet.
“But we both like a variety of different styles, so it will be really hard to narrow it down,” says Cristina.
Mark enjoys a clean and sleek look with contemporary elements, while Cristina resonates with a more traditional esthetic.
“We will definitely be mixing it up,” says Cristina.
The couple is hoping to take possession in the summer.
“The kids are already planning their rooms,” says Cristina with a laugh.
