Inderpreet Gill left his law career and a beautiful, spacious home behind when he moved with his family from India to Canada. Like most new arrivals, he experienced a steep learning curve with every aspect of life in this country.
“One of the major decisions I made as an immigrant was to buy a home for myself, but I didn’t know anything about houses in Canada. You come to India and I’ll tell you everything. It’s a hot country. Here, construction ideas are different,” says the 64-year-old, who worked with Shane Homes in 2011 to build his first home in Calgary’s Skyview Ranch community.
“When you’re just off the boat, you’re very afraid. Debbie at Shane Homes got hold of my finger and walked me through the whole process,” says Gill, referring to Deb Gearey, now area manager for the builder in Cornerstone.
So completely happy with his experience and his first Canadian home, there was only one person’s counsel he sought when one of his daughters was looking to buy.
“All daughters think their moms and dads are idiots. I said to her, let’s go talk to Debbie to get her advice on everything,” says Gill, who was hoping to dissuade his daughter from purchasing a condo.
Geary recommended they look at Shane’s Aries two-storey laned home, a 1,400 square foot three-bedroom, 2.5 bathroom floor plan. By adding Gill to the mortgage and placing the home on a zero-lot line, she was able to meet their budget and their expectations. Even exceeding them, by including basement development in the price.
“We Indians, we like to beat the price. We keep asking for more and more until someone says, that’s the best I can do,” Gill says candidly.
“I can tell you that Shane Homes is true to their motto. They don’t just build houses, they build homes. Debbie has won my heart, not once but many times.”
Cornerstone by Anthem United is a rapidly growing community east of Skyview Ranch, straddling Country Hills Boulevard N.E. on the west side of Stoney Trail. Morrison Homes, Pacesetter by Sterling Homes and Jayman Built are also building laned-homes on zero lot lines in Cornerstone, a diverse community with an equally diverse portfolio of single and multi-family homes.
Gearey says it was her privilege to work with Gill and his family, happy to find a great home that came in under their budget.
“His daughter’s first choice would have been comfortable, but it wasn’t her dream. Pricing is so good right now that if you can get yourself out of condo fees that are just going to go up, get yourself in a house,” she says. “In today’s climate, it’s not in your best interest to over-buy but it is absolutely as detrimental to under-buy.”
The Aries starts in the $370,000s and placing it on a zero lot allows for a separate side entrance to the basement, with most lots in Cornerstone zoned R2 for legal secondary suites.
The front of the home has a verandah and the main floor is an open concept layout with some architectural distinction between the living room and kitchen.
“We all enjoy the open concept plan but with the Aries, there’s a little bit of hiding what’s on the stove and a lot of people like that,” Gearey says.
An undermount kitchen sink, a generous pantry, quartz or granite countertops, luxury plank flooring, nine-foot main floor ceilings and a TV niche in the living room are all standard.
One of the customizations Gill and his daughter asked for was to bump out the home by two extra feet. It’s something Gearey says most people don’t know they can do with a smaller home.
“The gift of Shane Homes, really, is that we can customize. You don’t have to buy a $500,000 home to do this. I’ll take your 1,400-square-foot starter home and I will make it yours,” she says.
